Let’s slow this down for a moment and ask a question that sounds simple, but most people have never really answered properly.

Who am I?

Usually, the answer comes quickly. A name, a role, something external. But if you think about it, your name was given to you. Your roles came over time. None of that is really you at your core.

And that’s where the confusion begins for a lot of men. Life keeps moving .. work, responsibilities, expectations .. and you keep responding to it, but without ever really understanding yourself. You’re active, you’re busy, you’re functioning… but there’s no clarity underneath it.

Islam brings that clarity back in a very direct way.

Allah says that He did not create us except to worship Him. Not just in the sense of rituals, but in the sense of living with awareness of Him, aligning your life with that purpose. So before anything else, before titles or achievements, a man has to understand that he is a servant of Allah.

And this is not something new that we are discovering.

This is something we already agreed to.

Allah tells us in the Qur’an that when He brought forth the children of Adam and asked them:
“Am I not your Lord?”
They all said: “Yes, we testify.”
(Surah Al-A‘raf 7:172)

So this question of “Who am I?” is not something we are figuring out from scratch.

It’s something we are returning to.
That recognition of Allah… that awareness… it is already inside us. But over time, with distractions, pressure, and life, it becomes buried.
And once that becomes clear, the second question naturally follows.

What am I doing here?

Because if a man doesn’t answer that, he ends up living by pressure. He follows what’s expected of him, what he sees around him, what people define as success. And over time, he loses his centre.

This is why today there is so much talk about masculinity . Not because masculinity suddenly became a new concept, but because clarity around it has been lost. Before, it wasn’t discussed this much because it was understood.

A man knew he was responsible.

The Prophet ﷺ made it very simple when he said that each of you is a shepherd and each of you is responsible for what is under your care. That one line carries weight. It means you are accountable. Your actions are not random. What you do affects others.

And the early scholars didn’t complicate this. They spoke about truthfulness, trust, control over anger, consistency in behaviour. Real things. Internal things.

Allah also reminds us that He created الإنسان in the best form. So a man is not something broken that needs to be reinvented. He just needs to return to what he was created to be.

But that return doesn’t start outside.

It starts with honesty.

Am I clear about who I am, or am I just playing roles?
Am I living with purpose, or just reacting to life?
Am I carrying responsibility, or avoiding it?

Because once that becomes clear, everything else starts to settle. The noise reduces. The confusion reduces. Your decisions become more grounded.

So maybe instead of trying to become something new, the starting point is simpler.

Just sit with yourself, without distraction, and ask properly:

Who am I… in front of Allah?
And what am I actually doing with the life I’ve been given?

Because deep down… you already knew the answer.

You just need to return to it.
