Understanding Depression
Depression goes far beyond feeling low or having a difficult day. It is a genuine mental health condition that can affect your thoughts, emotions, and daily life. Tasks that once felt simple can suddenly become heavy, and emotional exhaustion can spill into every part of your routine.
At We for You, we understand that depression is not a sign of failure or weakness. It is an illness — one that deserves empathy, support, and the right kind of care.
How Depression Feels
Experiences vary from person to person, yet many people notice a combination of emotional and physical symptoms. These may include a persistent feeling of sadness or emptiness, a lack of interest in activities you used to enjoy, or a sense of guilt or worthlessness that lingers even when nothing is “wrong”. Sleep can become difficult or excessive, and fatigue may settle in no matter how much you rest. You might find decision-making harder than usual, struggle to focus, or notice changes in your appetite or weight. Some people also experience thoughts of self-harm or suicide, which can feel frightening and isolating.
If any of this resonates with you, please remember that support exists — and you do not have to go through this alone.
What Causes Depression?
Depression rarely has a single cause. It often develops through a combination of biological, emotional, and environmental factors. Chemical imbalances in the brain, such as shifts in serotonin or dopamine, may play a role. Genetics can increase vulnerability, especially if depression runs in the family. Past experiences of trauma, loss, or abuse can leave long-term emotional imprints. Ongoing stress — whether related to finances, relationships, or life pressures — can gradually wear you down. Feelings of isolation or a lack of meaningful connection contribute too. Some medical conditions, hormonal imbalances, or chronic illnesses can also trigger or worsen depression.
